The Norton Rose Fulbright Tower, known also as 1550 On the Green, is a bundle of six connected towers arrayed along the edge of Discovery Green, one of the most vibrant parks in the heart of downtown Houston. The six towers are defined by a 60’x60’ ideal office floor plan and rise to different heights, stepping up from the park toward a 28 story peak to form a series of generous rooftop terraces. The unique site fronts a street that curves inward toward the park to the east while featuring a complex, irregular perimeter framed by adjacent buildings to the north and west sides.
The design makes use of the unusual footprint by placing the elevator core to the back corner of the site instead of at the center of the interior as is typical in towers. This move frees up the interior for continuous connection where towers overlap while creating ample corner offices where the towers fan out as separate volumes. At street level the bases of the towers step upwards, lifting to welcome the city in and create a human scaled experience. The site design extends the adjacent park as an array of green spaces along the perimeter that flow into the lobby and ascend as a series of varied garden terraces at the towers’ rooftops.
The building has become home to companies such as Norton Rose Fulbright, Boston Consulting Group and Macquarie along with restaurants, cafes and retail at the ground floor. The design has prioritized sustainability and the building is projected to use 21% less energy than similar comparable towers. It is LEED Platinum v4 certified, and is targeting WELL Platinum, Fitwel (R) Three Star, and WiredScore (R) Platinum Certification. Additionally, it is projected to provide 30% more fresh air than a typical Class A building. These technical achievements underscore a commitment to sustainability and reinforce the core ambition of the building to bring the park up into the skyline and to connect people with their surrounding environment.
