Google Bay View Campus
Location: Mountain View, California, United States
Type: Commercial | Office
Size: 1,100,000 SF
Date: 2022
Status: Completed
Client: Google
Role: Assisted in design of elevated floor/courtyard system and interior design elements, while at BIG in collaboration with Heatherwick Studio and STUDIOS
Google Bay View’s campus is imagined as a vast complex of playful work and gathering spaces unified beneath a feature dome designed for ample natural lighting and solar energy generation. The interior is broadly organized on two primary levels, with the upper level comprised of an overlapping patchwork of interconnected square “tables” that serve as flexible infrastructural platforms for the modular, furniture-like elements that Googlers can freely reconfigure to suit their needs. A series of varied atrium openings framed by these tables bring daylight to ground level and create cross-level connections with feature staircases.
Whereas the upper level is where Googlers spend the most of their time at their dedicated work spaces and common areas, the lower level features an abundance of meeting rooms and other shared and supporting program. The tables are comprised of a reinforced concrete deck structure with a raised access floor to future-proof the workspace with maximum flexibility to easily accommodate different program layouts’ MEP and technological needs. Variously proportioned modular wood enclosures, planters and other human-scale features lend an informal and inviting texture to the building’s soaring interior. Beneath the vast dome unifying the project, the workspace hardly resembles a conventional office. Since Google Bay View’s opening, it has become a vibrant three-dimensional village for collaborative work and play.
